Executive Board Summary - May 2007 PDF Print E-mail
*Summary of the 5/16/07 MSLA Executive Board Meeting *

Seventeen board members navigated through torrential rains and flooded roads
to attend the meeting at MSLA headquarters in Lunenburg. This was Kathy
Lowe's last meeting as president.

Kathy reported on a meeting she and Sandy Kelly had with MassCUE President
Walter McKenzie and Conference Coordinator Regan Tiliakos. The emphasis was
on the relationship between the two associations as colleagues, not
competitors. It was a positive meeting, generating several ideas about
collaborative projects to work on together.

Bob Roth reported on National Library Legislative Day, held earlier this
month in Washington, D.C. Three school library issues are: a)the
under-funding of the Improving Literacy through School Libraries grant; b)
the revision of No Child Left Behind to include library teachers as highly
qualified staff; and c) the need for districts to be aware of opportunities
to provide school libraries with federal funds. Bob also explained that
Senate Resolution 134 requests the adoption of School Library Month every
September. Bob will write about actions our members can take for our webpage
and listserv, and we will write a letter as an organization to support the
revision of NCLB.

Sandy Kelly and Valerie Diggs met with Cheryl Liebling and Susan Wheltle
from the DOE earlier this month to seek endorsement of MSLA's new
Information Fluency Standards. Although they did not agree to endorse
separate Information Fluency standards, the DOE staffers suggested that our
standards could be incorporated into the next revision of the ELA
Frameworks. They welcome MSLA members' participation in the revision of the
ELA Frameworks and are particularly interested in having our members develop
bibliographies to supplement Frameworks for the content areas. They also
welcome input and additions about school libraries to the new K-12
Massachusetts Literacy Plan, which will is posted on the DOE website.

The board expressed sympathy at the passing of two member librarians, Ruth
Peck from Springfield and Mary Ann Walker from Brockton and will make a
memorial donation of $35 to each of their school libraries.

Jeannette Sisco volunteered to represent MSLA on the MLA Conference
Committee to help plan a track for school librarians for MLA's 2008
conference.

Susanna Paterson announced that Amy Sprung and Elizabeth Zimmer were elected
as Student SIG co-directors for 2007-08.
