I started substitute teaching in my hometown, Marshfield, and took a part-time library assistant position at the Ventress Public Library. I found that I loved working in a library and changed my concentration to library media to pursue a library media specialist certification. When I completed the program, there were no jobs for library teachers. The Children’s Librarian position opened up at the Ventress Public Library. I was offered the job but had to agree to pursue my M.L.S. I accepted the position and enrolled in Simmons. Ironically, in my last semester at Simmons, I met a library teacher who told me about an opening in Hingham School Department. I applied and was offered the position. I still was interested in technology and started studying networking. I decided to go full-time to Clark University to complete my Microsoft Certified Engineering Program (MCSE) and left the Hingham school system. I completed the program and got a job as Systems Librarian/Web Master for the Massachusetts Center for Career. When the Director of Libraries in Hull opened up, I applied and was offered the position. After seven years, I applied for the Library Coordinator position in Sharon. I just started my new position and I am so excited to be working in a community that supports and values the school libraries. I met Kathy Lowe when I applied for the Directory of Libraries for the Boston School System position several years ago. She was on the hiring committee that interviewed me. I did not get the job. Several months later, Kathy asked me if would like to co-chair the Standards and the Curriculum committee with Valerie Diggs. Valerie and I worked together with the standards committee to create the Information Literacy Standards draft. We divided the standards and curriculum committee. Valerie chairs the Standards Committee and I chair the Curriculum Committee. Presently, I am moderating the MSLA School Library Learning 2.0 tutorial. It is so exciting to have so many library teachers experimenting with Web 2.0 tools and, at the same time, learning and communicating with each other. So far, it is a huge success. It is my goal and objective to facilitate online sharing of lesson plans. I am in the process of creating a curriculum committee. It has been a privilege and please serving on the MSLA Executive Board. |

For over twenty years, I have worked in school, public, private and academic libraries. After my fourth child was born, I rethought my career objectives to become a computer programmer and decided to become a computer teacher. I was accepted in Bridgewater State College’s Masters in Education program but decided to get my teacher certification in my college major, Drama, instead of Math. Before completing my masters program, I became a certified Drama Teacher, 5-12, and English Teacher 9-12. It was 1986 and Proposition 2 ½ eliminated any hope of getting a teaching position.
